In an answer to a question asked by a devotee, Anandmurti Gurumaa replies that praying and devotion are done for gratitude and thankfulness for all the marvelous gifts that God has bestowed on us. It should not be a means for asking worldly happiness and objects from the Almighty.
Regarding how one can be free from the ill-effects of his/her past bad karma, Gurumaa says that one should sow the seeds of Good Karma (virtuous actions) in the present. For example, one should denote 10% of his/her monthly income for noble acts such as charity, social service, etc.
Besides that, each individual should devote at least 10% of their daily time (which comes to around 2.4 hours) to spiritual activities such as mantra chanting, meditation, prayer, etc. By doing such activities on a regular basis, one can easily rectify his/her past and lead a happy and blissful life.
